Prof. Alfonso Gambardella

Alfonso Gambardella is Professor of Corporate Management and Head of the Department of Management & Technology of Bocconi University, Milan.

He obtained his PhD in 1991 from the Department of Economics of Stanford University. His primary research interests are in the economics and management of technological innovations and the technology strategies of firms. On this and related topics he published in leading international journals, including Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Industrial Economics, Management Science, Organization Science, Research Policy, Strategic Management Journal.

He also published several books, including Science and Innovation: The US Pharmaceutical Industry in the 1980s (Cambridge University Press, 1995) and Markets for Technology (with Ashish Arora and Andrea Fosfuri, MIT Press, 2001), which are both recognized to be core texts on these subjects. His books and journal publications are widely cited.

He has been visiting professor in the Department of Economics, Stanford University (2003, 2005-6), and MIT’s Sloan School (2015-16). He was the co-editor of Strategic Management Journal in 2013-2019, and is currently Department Editor of Business Strategy of Management Science. Moreover, he is a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society and a member of the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), London. In 2015-16 he was Chair of the Business Policy and Strategy Division of the US Academy of Management. He participated in numerous research projects of the European Commission and other research agencies.
