A geographical indication (GI) is a distinctive sign identifying a product whose quality, reputation or other characteristics relate to its geographical origin. GIs represent a type of Intellectual Property and are crucial to both the European and global economies. A sign must identify a product as originating in a given place to be considered a GI.
