Sir Robin Jacob joined the Faculty of Law at UCL in May 2011 leaving the Court of Appeal of England and Wales to do so. Having read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, Sir Robin then read for the Bar and started practice at the Intellectual Property Bar in 1967. From 1976 to 1981 he was the Junior Counsel for the Controller of Patents and for all Government departments in intellectual property. He was made a Queen's Counsel in 1981 and was appointed a High Court Judge in 1993. From 1997 to 2001 he was Supervising Chancery Judge for Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff. Sir Robin was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in October 2003 and was Treasurer of Grays Inn in 2007. He continues to sit from time to time in the Court of Appeal and will sometimes act as an arbitrator or mediator. He has written extensively on all forms of intellectual property.
Richard Vary is a partner in Bird&Bird's Intellectual Property Practice and Tech and Comms. sector group. He specialises in multi-jurisdictional electronics patent litigation with a particular focus on mobile telecommunications patent litigation and arbitration work. He also has extensive experience of dealing with IP in transactions, and strategic IP advice. Before joining Bird&Bird in 2016, Richard was the Vice President and Head of Litigation at Nokia, where he managed Nokia's global commercial litigation and was a member of Nokia's Legal & Compliance leadership team. Richard is a regular and well-regarded public speaker, particularly on issues such as cross-border patent litigation, the UPC and standard essential patents. He has been named twice in Managing IP's yearly list of the 50 most influential people in intellectual property and is regularly viewed as a corporate IP star by MIP. In 2013 he was awarded 'In-House Counsel of the Year' by The Lawyer. Richard sits part time as a District Judge in London and the South East, and in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court.
